  1. For years, Wayne Gretzky was the
  2. greatest player in the NHL. When did it
  3. appear likely Mario would someday take
  4. his place? It just might have been during
  5. the Canada Cup series in 1987. The two
  6. teamed up to play for Team Canada.
  7. Wayne played center and Mario was at
  8. right wing. Together they led Canada to
  9. the Cup.

  11. During the series, Wayne helped Mario
  12. understand just how good he could be.
  13. "He gave me a lot of confidence in
  14. myself," Mario said. "Super Mario" scored
  15. a tournament-high 11 goals. Nine of
  16. them were set up by "The Great One,"
  17. Wayne Gretzky.
